Most of the way on US 40 through Colorado was pretty flat along valleys with mountains on each side. However, there were lots of pretty scenery. Here is a view from close to Dinosaur, CO and then one from Jensen, Utah. Dinosaur, CO. Jensen, Utah.
Utah Lake was very beautiful and strongly contrasted with the arid conditions around it. The Utah basin was flat and surrounded by mountains (well, duh) giving it a stark appearance. Utah Lake. Utah Basin.
US Route 40 followed the valley for Current Creek for quite a ways. Much of the land was pasture, but so dry and barren that it was hard for me to imagine that it would produce enough faraging material to warrant fencing it. Current Creek, Utah. Current Creek, Utah.
As I was approaching Salt Lake City, I passed Strawberry Lake. I wondered if it was to salty to use for irrigation as the area around it was quite arid. However, it did make a wonderful contrast. Strawberry Lake, Utah. Strawberry Lake, Utah.
I got to Salt Lake City and found the Bally's closest to my route. I stayed the night in the lot of the Wal-mart just across from it. I chose a corner with lots of trees and bushes by it and parked next to a camper. However, at 12 midnight a crew came out and started trimming the bushes. It really didn't disturb my sleep but I wondered why they would do that at that time. Salt Lake City Bally. Salt Lake City Wal-mart.
My guess is that they couldn't just ask the camper to leave, so they were making it unpleasant, but that seemed a little silly to me. I had thought that Denver had some impressive views of mountains from the city, but Salt Lake City had even better views. These are the views from the parking lot at Bally's. Wow! Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City, Utah.
Out of Salt Lake City (on the morning of May 7) I took US Route 91 North on up to Idaho. North of Ogden, Utah I saw some very impressive mountain scenery. US Route 89. US Route 89 and 91.
