| While it only rained on my car a little in White Bird Junciton during the night, they seem to have gotten snow further North. As I proceeded further North on Rt 91, I encountered a snow storm that was sticking to the roads, making a wet mush. I took
it easy and drove through it. In Lewiston, Idaho I switched over to U.S. Route 12 West. There was a plant that looked like a chemical plant, but I suspect it was a paper plant (from some of the others I saw later which were run by Boise Cascade, a pape
r company). |
| I was surprised to see the paper plants as the area was mostly rolling hills with crop fields or pasture (picture of Wattsburd, WA); not many pine forests close by. However, US 12 went by a major waterway, so they probably brought many of the trees i
n that way. Just past Walla Walla on US 12 I saw a hill that had several windmills on it (as you can see if you look close at the picture on the right). |
| Later US 12 followed the Tieton River and we were back to pine forests in the Wenatchee National Forest. |
| There was some really pretty scenery as US 12 West crossed White Pass. The road was fine there, but we were high enough that there was still snow on the ground there. |
| The picture on the left is also from White Pass. On the right is a picture of a lake close to Mt. St. Helens (so all those trees and this highway were all buried in ash a decade or so ago, I presume. |

| At Olympia, WA, I got off Interstate 5 (headed North towards Seattle) to drop by the house of a person who sells used books on eBay. I had been looking for a Jack Chalker book and got it for 99 centsbut with shipping and handling as an additional $1.
80. However, the timing was such that my check had recently cleared as I was driving through Olympia. |
I was able to pick up the book, meet the seller and her family (includes several dogs), and save on the shipping and handling charges (I had verified that that was possible before actually doing it).
