From Virginia Beach I went to Charlottesville, VA. I hap hoped to attend their Dances of Universal Peace (DUP or sufi dance) at the Quaker Friends House on the first Wednesday evening, but there was no dance that evening. Doh! I stayed with a lovely woman and her roommate through CouchSurfing.org. THe next day I visited Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello. They had a new visitors center (above). They had tours every ten minutes which were very well run. Along each side of the house were service buildings below and dug into the side of the hill with tunnels going under the house as shown below. Monticello, Charlottesville, VA. =0=

Above are pictures of the wash room (for laundry) and kitchen. Here is a room which would have been the quarters for one of the slaves who worked at the main house. There was also a tour of "Mulberry Street' which was a series of simple wooden structures for the artisan slaves that Thomas Jefferson used to produce goods for the plantation as well as neighbors. There was a second tour of those structures (just foundations remain now) which was very interesting. Monticello, Charlottesville, VA. =0=
Thomas Jefferson was buried at Monticello as was his wish. However, he had inherited a large debt with much of the land he got (from his father in law) and that debt required that Monticello and almost all of his slaves be sold to pay off the debt. Monticello, Charlottesville, VA. =0=
