In April, the Albany area Unitarian churches organized another group of volunteers to help with the restoration after Hurricane Sandy. This time we went to Staten Island. There were about 20 of us this time and we stayed at the Staten Island Moravian Church. The Moravians are a smaller Protestant denomination with a long and rich tradition. We sort of camped out in their gym and used the kitchen of their community room above the gym as they had showers available for volunteers. Here is their church and below is the building with the gym and community room (its exterior looks more like administrative offices to me, I liked the facade). The showers in the trailer, unheated, were fine, but many people went to YMCA where volunteers were also allowed to shower whether they were members or not. Staten Island Sandy Relief Trip. =0=

There were two or more organizations sharing the building above to organize and support volunteers. We worked on various houses in the neighborhood. Most everyone came back to have lunch together. Staten Island Sandy Relief Trip. =0=

First thing on Saturday morning I was able to work on one house which needed treatment for mold (above along with the homeowner and her scrpabook of pictures from the strom). We just sprayed and scrubbed the outer walls with tri-sodium phosphate and water. No bleach with this group though I have heard of others who used bleach, too. Then the rest of the weekend I worked on removing the drywall and such from the house next door. They delayed in their decision to repair and so could not just leave the water soaked material by the curb. Staten Island Sandy Relief Trip. =0=
