I took the train to Manchester, U.K. and then the bus to Upper Mill and, finally, North Saddleworth where I visited a distant cousin, Maude, and her husband Edward. Edward was retired party worker for the Conservative party and loved to spend time hiking in the 'moors' or hills around Lancashire (their county). Even in the summer it was cool with many light rains, so we always had slickers in case we got rained on. I quite enjoyed our time in the moors. N. Saddleworth, Lancashire, U.K.. =0=

The tops of many of the hills were quite desolate with clumps of very hardy grass called Turks Heads. Elsewhere we would walk along 'rights of way' which were about ten feet wide with walls on each side. There would be pastures on each side. The rock walls appeared quite old made of rocks from the fields and they were about the only fences we ever saw. Above and here you can see horses and cows which were common in the pastures. N. There were also old stone houses (probably from around 1500 or so to qualify for old in those parts) as shown above. Also above might be a picture of N. Saddleworth from one of the hills around it. Here is a picture of houses along a lane which may be the lane where Maude and Edward lived. N. Saddleworth, Lancashire, U.K.. =0=

There were pastures all around N. Saddleworth. They even had old stocks from the traditional method of punishing minor crimes, though those hadn't been used in many years. Before my 60 days were up, I headed back to the U.S. and up to Boston for graduate school. N. Saddleworth, Lancashire, U.K.. =0=

I am not sure where the pictures above are from, but they might be from Manchester on my way back to the U.S. airbase and the flight home. Here is a picture of a C-140 which is what I took back to McGuire Airbase. On the return I flew in a C140 with a Harrier inside of it with the wings on top (not attached). There were just a few seats by the nose. Only soldiers could fly with it as parts of it were classified (i.e. secret). N. Saddleworth, Lancashire, U.K.. =0=
