Above are pictures of the Protestant Chapel from the level of the Plain (where cadet parades are held). Here is a picture of the Hudson in winter. Some times it would completely freeze over, but not often when I was there. Barbara and I visited during the Christmas break in 1976 / 1977 and there was hardly anyone around. There was a road behind and under the mess hall that cadets from the 1st regiment would take from their area to the gym for P.T. (Phyisical Training, the milirary name for P.E.) and intramurals (mandatory athletic competition for any cadet not on a varsity team). It was the loading dock for shipments to the kitchen (under the mess hall) and trash pickup (it stank back there). However, that was a 'cadet only' area, but as there was no one around we didn't notice the 'authorized personnel only' signs (silly us) and went anyway. Below is the road we took (just past the signs we didn't notice) with the first regiment area to the left (Old South above Grant Hall is right there and is where I lived for four years) and farthest along on the right was the back entrance to the mess hall that we used. Next to that is the view back further down the road. You can see the only remaining barracks from around 1900 on the right where the 'Tony's Pizza' place was in the basement. Yummy. I had really enjoyed the ice waterfalls to hill side of the road just under the mess hall and it is shown above and below. Here is a picture of the road back through the cadet area on the other side. Sally Port, West Point, NY =0=

Above is a picture further along toward the plain (through the 'sally port') and the view back from the plain. Here is a picture that shows the formal entrance to the mess hall. The first regiment living area is to the left in this picture and the gym is to the right. Here is the view back toward the messhall as we continued out to the public area. Below is also a picture of me in front of the entrance to Thayer Hall, the old riding building that had been coverted into class rooms. Next to that is the view of the science building from that bridge over the road which most traffic takes on their way through West Point. West Point, NY =0=
