In 1980 my cousin Amy was living in Gainesville, FL, teaching at the University of Florida there. We visited her there and made a trip to St. Augustine. It was first visited in 1513 by Ponce de Leon and was a colony by 1563, long before those late comers at Jamestown (not to speak of the laggards, the Pilgrims). Here are pictures from the Castillo de San Marcos which protected Spanish interests from 1672 to 1763. | ![]() |

The Castillo de San Marcos was never defeated, only transferred with the rest of Florida in various treaties and, finally, sale to the U.S. in 1821. I really liked St. Augustine and it had a great deal of character as one would expect. Below is a picture of my brother, Michael with Amy's daughters, Colleen and Catherine. | ![]() |

Above and here are pictures of Amy with her husband and daughters. I don't remember the name of her husband, but she has since divorced him and later married Jack. At the time they seemed happy enough, but there were problems in the marriage (and they aren't always obvious to observers). Below are pictures of Barbara and I. | ![]() |
