After the tour of the Roman Forum, the bus took us to the Vatican where we had a couple of hours to explore on our own. Above is a picture of St. Marks square (actually pretty round) and St. Peter's Basillica. Next to that (if my memory is correct) is the window where the black or white smoke announces the decision on a new pope. Here is a picture of one of the street performers dressed as an Egyptian statue. It was pretty warm in Rome (perhaps 90 degrees) and the costumes looked pretty hot. We decided to walk to three sites which weren't too far and Nikki really wanted to so. We walked along the Fiume Tevere (which is the river that goes through Rome). They had some nice statues decorating the bridges over the river as shown below. | ![]() |

Above and here are more pictures from along the river, Fiume Tevere. When Barbara and I had visited Rome in 1978, pizza was not very common in Italy and, in our opinion, not very good (but folk tales say that the modern version of pizza was developed in NYC and we were familiar with Boston pizza which was quite good at the time). However, pizza was quite popular and readily available in Italy on this trip and their pizza was quite good. Here is a picture of Jay enthusiastically considering where we would have lunch. We also saw several Catholic monks (or so they seemed and we didn't ask) as shown below. It was pretty warm and we got back early to the area where we met Sabina and took the bus back. Below is a picture of Sabina (pink pants) and some of the tour buses in Rome, convertable and double deckers. | ![]() |

After we got back in the early afternoon we rested for a bit. Jay and Nikki seem to have fun taking pictures. Nikki was pretty skilled at taking pictures of herself (I wasn't there). | ![]() |
