At the base of the dome the views were most impressive as shown above. Then we headed up the final 400 steps or so to the top of the dome. The stairs were much more cramped and sometimes at odd angles as shown here and below. Nikki took the pictures below. That last one includes me and is taken upright, the stairs were horizontal but the passage above was at an angle making it a little awkward. | =0= |

At the top there was some really nice views of Rome as shown above. The one on the right is St. Michael's Square. Here and below includes views of the Vatican city as well. | =0= |

Above are a couple of pictures Nikki took from the top of the dome showing a decorative sphere and the top of the dome itself. The dome went a little higher as you can see here (and from below at the top of this page. Then we headed down a different set of stairs (the stairs were really too narrow for people to pass each other going up or down). Below is the egris (exit) stairs from the top of the dome (half way down). For this first day of \ 'church dress' Nikki was most cautious (which was wise), but when she saw that skirts to the knees and covering the shoulders was all that was required, she was more comfortable on other tours. There was also a gift shop and visting nuns. | =0= |
