I was very tired from the flight as it left about 6PM and got in about 10AM, but there we lost 7 hours in the time zone changes. They served two nice meals on the flight and I did sleep a little, but not well. Elif asked me if I wanted to have a nap, but my strategy for adjusting to the new time zone is to skip sleep as needed so that I am really exhausted and will be able to sleep at the new time.... After we checked in at the Guest House, we took a city bus to the Metrobus stop. The Metrobuses are a network of buses that have special lanes in the center of the freeways. After that we met Elif's dear friend, Nur, also an environmental engineer, but she we works for the Turkish research group now, helping to decide which projects get funded (they both studied at ITU together). We met at the entrance to the Istanbul subway (above). Their subway is very new (and quiet) but not very long yet (it is being extended). We took it to Taxim, an older and more crowded district shown below. | ![]() |

I was very happy to meet Nur. She has a wonderful name which means 'Divine Light'. I can imagine no better name and quality to aspire to than being a divine light. We went to a theatre where there was a demostration of Whirling Dervishes, a practice of Mevlana Sufis. There were musicians and singers for the music and then the whirlers. When they reached there spots and started spinning, there arms were in close and then opened their arms as they continued spinning. | ![]() |
